Beau (Kerry) Dick was born in Alert Bay, but was from Kingcome Inlet. He was introduced to traditional art forms by his grandfather, the late Chief Jimmy Dick and by his father, Ben (Blackie) Dick. He studied with Doug Cranmer and Henry Hunt, among others, who taught him traditional design and carving techniques. Beau created many carvings, prints and paintings over the span of his career, in a variety of styles. His work can be found in museums across Canada, and has been shown in various exhibitions around the world. In 2013, Dick organized a protest journey from the north of Vancouver Island to the BC Parliament in Victoria. There, he and others enacted a copper-cutting ceremony—a form of public shaming signifying the cleaving of a relationship, in this case between First Nations and the government. In 2014, he led a similar journey from UBC to Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Dick served as artist-in-residence at UBC from 2013-2017, and is the subject of the 2017 film "Meet Beau Dick: Maker of Monsters."
