Flying Fox Figure Item Number: 2716/19 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Woven flying fox figure. The figure has pointed ears, cowrie shell eyes and a long protruding snout. Upon a round body are folded wings and long legs with individual toes. The figure is painted black-brown with an orange neck, chest and wing tips. Attached to the back is a string for hanging.

Specific Techniques

The artist uses the fibre of the gumba tree. It is cut, soaked in water for a week and then spun into a twine called 'manji'. Formerly the weavings were supported by a rattan frame, but Angelina has developed the use of gourds and seeds as a basis for the weavings.
