Spoon Item Number: 2713/28 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Carved wooden child’s spoon with a rounded shaft and an oval shaped handle; circular shaped bowl. The handle is painted black with a feather-like design of u-forms followed by a lozenge pattern.

Narrative

This example is very similar in style to 2713/29 and, although both spoons are small and carved rather crudely, they are likely the work of Samuel Elwitt. The wood, pigment, and unusual shape of the bowl is mirrored by other spoons by Elwitt in MOA’s collection. The formline design painted on the handle of this spoon is very similar to patterns that Elwitt deployed to illustrate bird wings.
