Description

Print showing a scene of women conversing behind a gate, two carrying trays of flowers on their heads. Ox and cart in background. Colours are green, blue, pink, yellow, brown and black. Black Japanese characters and red symbol on bottom right corner of image. Red characters on bottom right corner of image border. The mount is marked "Made in Japan".

Narrative

This print, Hanauri (花売; Flower vendors) by Wada Sanzō (和田三造) is from the series, Showa shokugyō ezukushi (昭和職業絵尽; Occupations of Shōwa Japan in pictures), originally published by Nishinomiya shoin (西宮書院) in 1939 –1941. The original version has hand-written print and series titles. This print published by Kyoto hanga-in (京都版画院) is from a later edition. The print is signed三造 (Sanzō) with his seal in red and is marked with the publisher’s seal, 版元京都版画院 摺大野 (Hanmoto Kyoto hanga-in suri Ōno; published by Kyoto hanga-in; printed by Ōno).
