History Of Use

According to Nlak'pamux Elder Shirley Sterling this basket may have been a toy boat. There are stains in the center where a small figure could have sat. A note submitted with basket by Judge Castillou reads: The body of the salmon is only the canoe. White man always wonders why salmon always go back where it is born. The two headed spirit takes the canoe back where fish was born. Note the single seat for the two headed spirit-serpent to ride. Lakaplan, Fraser River.
