Basket maker Theresa Klama was originally from Boston Bar. Boston Bar is in the Fraser Canyon above Yale. She married a German settler named William Voght and moved with him to the Nicola Valley in the 1870s. According to family history, she was a great orator and used her skills to dispel tension in the Nicola Valley when local people became upset at the vast quantities of land that the European colonists were preempting. Nlaka'pamux Elder Shirley Sterling and her sister Mary Jane Joe, both of the First Nations House of Learning at UBC, are her great great granddaughters.
