Description

Print depicting a standing figure looking down at a seated old man. Above the figures is a scroll with columns of text, light background patterns and two plants with a printed red outer cover. Below is printed more text, and there are several more columns of text as well as seals throughout. The print is adhered to a card backing with a rice paper window overtop and a rice paper cover attached along one side of the backing.

Narrative

Title: Yomogiu (蓬生); publisher: Ise-ya Ichibei (伊勢屋市兵衛). The print is signed Chōōrō Kuniyoshi ga (朝櫻楼国芳画) with the artist seal known as Yoshi kiri seal (芳桐印). The work is from the Genji kumo ukiyoe awase series (源氏雲浮世画合 (Scenes amid Genji Clouds Matched with Ukiyo-e Pictures), originally published in 1845–1846 by Ise-ya Ichibei (伊勢屋市兵衛). The print title, Yomogiu (蓬生) comes from the title of volume 15 of the Genji monogatari (源氏物語/The Tale of Genji), and has been translated variously as "The Palace in the Tangled Woods" (Waley) and "A Waste of Weeds" (Tyler).
