Utagawa Kuniyoshi (歌川国芳) (1797-1861) was a ukiyo-e artist born in Tokyo. The son of a silk-dyer, Yanagiya Kichiyemon (柳屋吉右衛門), he was called Igusa Yoshisaburo (井草芳三郎). His gagō or artist names include Ichiyūsai (一勇齊), Saihōsha (採芳舎), Chōōrō (朝櫻楼), Senshin (仙真), Sekkoku (雪谷), and his pseudonyms include Ichimyōkai Hodoyoshi (一妙開程芳) and Ryuen (柳燕). Active dates c. 1814-1860.
