Basketry Canoe Item Number: 1719/20 a-d from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Coiled cedar root basketry canoe (part a). One seat (part b) has been detached. There are two paddles which are painted black on one side of the blade with a white letter in the middle, one has an "S" (part c) and the other has an "M" (part d).
The donor received this basketry canoe as a gift from Margaret Lester, who taught basket making at the Pemberton Museum. She had all her students make model canoes like this as an easy project for beginners. Diane Billy, one of the students, noted that the canoe she made for this class went to England.
