Black damask silk haori (羽織) or jacket/overcoat. The neck and centre opening are edged with a wide band. The sleeves are short with hanging panels and an opening under the arms. On the back of the neck and each sleeve is a flower embroidered in light coloured thread. The damask is woven with an abstract horizontal pattern. The inner lining or haura (羽裏) with colourful designs known as gaku’ura (額裏) is cream silk with a floral pattern and covers only the upper part of the kimono. It has three family crests or kamon (家紋) in the shape of diamond-shaped flower motifs known as kage hanabishi (陰花菱).

History Of Use

Haori (羽織) is a formal jacket worn over kimono. In the past, haori was worn as an overcoat only by men, but now worn by both men and women. Decorated linings called gaku’ura (額裏) are usually used just for men’s haori.
