A scholar of Japanese history. In 1987 Professor Hatano taught a summer session course at UBC and stayed at the home of Dr. William Holland, of the Asian Studies department at UBC. He offered to send his mother's kimono to the MOA. Audrey Hawthorn agreed so he sent three kimonos to UBC from Japan. He died sometime around 2004.
