Description

A woman's hat made from a woven straw base that has been coated with gesso and formed into a boat shape by bending the brim down at each side. Brim is covered with black velvet, and cotton fabric. Crown is decorated with pleated embroidered red, green, black, and gold-coloured ribbon. Heavy threads attached to the underside of the crown to secure to the head.

Narrative

The style of the hat is particular to this village. The donor spent a holiday in the village in 1958. She says that this type of costume would have been worn regularly on Sundays. See photographs in UBC archives.
