Olga was born February 20, 1912 in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. After leaving Russia due to the 1917 Revolution and living in many places, in 1927 she and her family arrived in Abbotsford, B.C. where they lived on a farm. Despite the financial hardships of the Depression, education was highly valued and Olga and her brothers all attended UBC. She received her B.Sc. in 1933 and her M.Sc. in Microbiology in 1935. Olga and George (Dr. George M. Volkoff (1914-2000) were married in 1940 and spent the war years in Montreal where she was involved in the first commercial production of penicillin. She subsequently taught courses and did research in Industrial Mycology at UBC.
