Gong Item Number: 2668/11 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Circular metal gong with a convex side and black stamps with characters on the back. Yellow cord is tied in a loop for hanging through two holes punched near the edge.

Narrative

Made pre-WWII, based on hammering technique. The stamps on the back are factory stamps. The pentagonal stamp has a bit of the tool name on the left, the shop name in the centre, "polish with water" on the right, and the origin of the gong on the top (made in Shanghai). The oval stamp in the middle has part of the street name/address of the factory.
