Knowledge shared by institutions

Master Toa Wong (黃滔師傅) was MOA's Cantonese opera advisor for decades, starting in 1972. Wong Toa started his apprenticeship in Cantonese opera at the age of 14, and worked on the "red boats" that took troupes around the Canton Delta until World War II. He was invited to Canada as a Cantonese opera teacher by the Jin Wah Sing Musical Association in Vancouver. He immigrated to Canada in 1961 (his professional skills allowed him to enter when immigration was otherwise restricted). In 2012 Master Wong Toa was presented with Vancouver's Civic Merit Award at Vancouver's City Hall for his cultural contributions to the city since 1961.
