Unfinished Figure Item Number: 3145/4 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Seed fully covered with woven plant fibre. At top is a woven head with an unfinished flap attached at its base, and a long strand of weaving fibre hanging from end. Third part in a four part series (see 3145/2,3,5).

Narrative

3145/2-5 is a four part series showing the process of making a woven flying fox figure.

Specific Techniques

The artist uses the fibre of the gumba tree. It is cut, soaked in water for a week and then spun into a twine called 'manji'. Formerly the weavings were supported by a rattan frame but Angelina has developed the use of gourds and seeds as a basis for her weavings.
