Flying Fox Figure Item Number: 3145/5 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Uncoloured flying fox made of woven plant fibres. A large seed is covered in an open weave of light yellow and brown plant fibres. At top is a head with long snout, pointed ears, and ridge down centre of face. Wings are held close to the body, thumbs pointing upward, and attached to the feet and legs below. A plant fibre phallus emerges from the bottom of the seed. Fourth part in a four part series (see 3145/2-4).

Specific Techniques

The artist uses the fibre of the gumba tree. It is cut, soaked in water for a week and then spun into a twine called 'manji'. Formerly the weavings were supported by a rattan frame but Angelina has developed the use of gourds and seeds as a basis for her weavings.

Narrative

3145/2-5 is a four part series showing the process of making a woven flying fox figure. See 2729/9 for a coloured, finished, figure.
