Miniature Moccasins Item Number: 3194/4 a-b from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Miniature beaded moccasins. Shoes are made of a light coloured hide with a wide flap made of tan and red cotton sewn over leather that stands upright around the back of the ankle. Flap is decorated with black beading at bottom, and a cotton pull loop is attached at back centre of heel. Shoe ‘b’ has a silk-like tie at front (missing on shoe ‘a’). Toes are decorated with blue, white and yellow beads in a concentric diamond shape.

Narrative

Robert Gale's grandfather (Gervase Edward Gale) was a missionary and principal of St. Paul's School at Cardston, Alberta, on the Blood Reserve, c. 1904-1910. His grandmother, Hattie May is said to have collected the Blood (Kainai) objects in MOA accessions 3194 and 3239.
