Description
Bini mask carved of wood. A woman's face with a small nose, small mouth, and large almond-shaped eyes with angled cutouts beneath. She wears a headdress with a small figure front and centre with a small tray directly behind them, and then another anthropomorphic figure extending up over the tray. The eyes, mouth and tray are coloured white with chalk. On either side of the central figure are carved decorations, and attached jar-like ornaments.
History Of Use
Said by collector to be used in an ancestor worship festival, representing the mother figure.
Narrative
Collected by Lieber in Akannu, a village in Umuahia Province, Bende division. Lieber was living in Nigeria from 1965-1970, lecturing at the University of Ibadan under the auspices of CIDA.
