Skull Mask Item Number: 3326/1 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Small carved skull mask. A raised ridge line extends down the forehead and nose. The lower half of the face tapers in and curves outwards at the lips. The eyes are two cutout holes, with brown pigment extending down from the holes to the peak of the lips. A crown or headband of two parallel horizontal bands topped with triangles wraps around the head. Beneath, hair is indicated by small sections of brown marked with vertical grooves. The mouth is very angular, grinning, and filled with long white teeth.

Narrative

Purchased by Lieber from a trader at the University of Ibadan. Lieber spent six years (1965-1970) lecturing at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, under the auspices of CIDA.
