Napkin Ring Item Number: 3614/1 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Silver napkin ring. Engraved animal (whale, or sea mammal?) design covers the outer surface, with cross-hatched background. The design is bordered at the top and bottom by a vertical, tightly packed linear design, all the way around. Engraved inscription on inside.

Narrative

Engraved inscription: "From Edna to George, Xmas 1926". George refers to George Munro, but it is unknown who Edna was; according to the donor there is no record that George was ever married. Munro was her late husband's grandmother’s companion for c. 25 years, which is how the napkin ring came into her family. It is thought that George had worked in Haida Gwaii as a log buyer in his earlier years, which may be where he was gifted the Haida napkin ring.
