Description

Print with three panels hinged together, showing five ladies and a boy (servant) at a market place. Two ladies at left are not wearing socks. Background is of store keepers and other shoppers. Colours are red, blue, grey, brown and white. (Adhered to a cardboard support.)

Narrative

This triptych is entitled Tōto hane’i no zu (東都繁栄之図; The prosperous Eastern Capital), and signed 一寿斎芳員画 (Ichijusai Yoshikazu ga). It was published by Sanoya Kihee/Kihei (佐野屋喜兵衛) with his seal 佐野喜 (Sanoki) marked on the print. The depicted women stand in front of a kimono wholesale store called Iwaki Masuya (岩城升屋); the store name is marked with Iwa (岩) in two squares on red shop curtains.
