Description

A print showing three girls carrying babies on their back. The girl furthest to the left is facing forward and wearing hanten (半纏; traditional short winter coat) that has a pink, red, and light blue pattern on a grey background with a yellow ribbon. The girl in the middle has her head turned to the left and is wearing hanten that has a striped blue, grey, pink, and black pattern. The girl to the right side has her head turned to the left and is wearing hanten that has a light blue and red pattern on a yellow background. The background from the top down is light blue, beige, and brown. The artist’s vertically rectangular, red seal, ひとし appears in the lower right corner. The print is horizontally rectangular.

Narrative

This print is by Kiyohara Hitoshi (清原斉; 1896 - 1956) and entitled Komori-uta (子守唄; Lullaby). He published several children’s picture books in the 1930s–1950s in addition to producing nihonga (日本画) or “Japanese style-paintings.”
