Anne M. Smith began her association with U.B.C. as a student, graduating with a B.A. in 1921. She later received a B.L.S. from the University of Washington and an M.A. in Library Science from the University of Michigan. Smith joined the UBC Library as a reference librarian in 1930. Later she became assistant librarian in charge of reference and information services. During two interregna (1949, 1951), Smith served as acting University Librarian. She taught at the library school of the University of Keio, Tokyo in 1953-1954. After retiring from UBC in 1964, Smith continued to teach courses in the UBC School of Librarianship.
