Description

A print showing two children walking in the ayame (あやめ; iris) garden in the rain. The child to the left is wearing a kimono that has a purple leaf pattern on a pink background. The child to the right is wearing a kimono that has a red, brown, and white geometric floral pattern and is holding a light blue umbrella over their heads. They are walking on a brown path among white and purple irises. The sky from the top down is dark grey and light grey. The artist’s red rectangular seal and his signature in Japanese, ひとし in black appear at the upper right side. The print is horizontally rectangular.

Narrative

This print is by Kiyohara Hitoshi (清原斉; 1896 - 1956) and entitled Ayame (あやめ; Iris). He published several children’s picture books in the 1930s–1950s in addition to producing nihonga (日本画) or “Japanese style-paintings.”
