Description

Image of a human figure walking to the right side holding an umbrella over their face for protection from the snow. The figure is wearing clothing that is black and light blue with pink accents. The umbrella is white with an orange rim. Behind the figure, there is a two storey red building with a one story building next to it on the left side. In front of the figure is a tree angled upward to the top left corner. Snow is also on the tree, the roofs of the buildings and the ground. The sky is grey. The image has a thin black border. In the lower left corner, there is a circular red seal with black characters above. Along the lower left side, there are more black characters. The print is on a vertically rectangular, off-white paper piece.

Narrative

Print by Kawase Hasui (川瀬 巴水). Called Shiba Zōjō ji (芝増上寺), it is from his series Tokyo Nijjukei (東京二十景), or Twenty Views of Tokyo, originally published between 1925 and 1930. This edition doesn’t include all the writings in the original 1925 edition, and looks similar to the 1934 edition, but the donor is said to have collected it before 1930, thus it is not clear which edition this print comes from. The print is signed 巴水 (Hasui) with his seal.
