Kawase Hasui (川瀬 巴水) (May 18, 1883–November 7, 1957) was a woodblock artist born in Tokyo. His real name was Kawase Bunjiro (川瀬文治郎). He is known as co-establishing the shin-hanga (新版画, literally “new prints”) movement by revitalizing the traditional ukiyo-e. He first trained under Aoyagi Bokusen (青柳墨) in the school of Kawabata Gokushō (川端玉章). He later studied with Araki Kanyū (荒木寛友) and also studied Western style paintings under Okada Saburōsuke (岡田三郎助) for a while. He then studied with Kaburaki Kiyotaka (鏑木清方) and his gō/gagō (号/雅号) or artist name, Hasui (巴水) was given by Kaburaki. His works are mostly landscapes.
