Description
A black woven wool flat disc-shaped hat. Embroidery covers the top. Yellow lines the brim and pink lines the inner form. Unbleached cotton lines the centre area. Circles of pink, green, red, and yellow wool and white string are tacked onto top to make plant-like designs. Wear on tie strings.
History Of Use
The tradition of regionally distinctive dress is still a feature of some of the remote villages of highland Peru. The costumes are a mixture of Spanish influence with surviving indigenous aspects and materials. This hat is worn for everyday and fiestas. The style is European in origin, but the practice of wearing locally distinctive hats is in accordance with old Inca custom.
