Description

Human face mask carved from one piece of wood. Stylized with two planes. Eyes are horizontal slits at meeting of cheeks and brows. High domed ridged forehead. There is an upturned nose and a closed mouth with parted lips having four perforations in the rim of the upper lip. Nylon string tied across back.

History Of Use

Worn with cloth and decorations attached to perforations and used in ritual dances.

Narrative

Writing inside the back reads: 'Belgian Congo' and 'Purchased in Johannesburg, S.A., 1971.'
