Description
Man's sash with 5 fine grey warp stripes on a red ground. Multi-coloured, embroidered geometric chevron and lozenge shapes at one end. The fringes at each end are twisted and tangled.
History Of Use
Red bandas with grey pinstripes are characteristic of Santa Catarina Palopo. Also characteristic - after wrapping them around to secure their pants at the waist, they allow the banda ends to hang freely in front of them. The folds at the waist serve as pouches to carry articles. Often the sash is the last vestige of men's traditional costume.

Specific Techniques
This sash was woven by a woman on a back strap loom. It is a wrap faced plain weave with multiple wefts for strength. The brocade is a single faced discontinuous supplementary weft. Fringes are unwoven warps.
