Description

Brown face with black and white dots on lower portion; white eye sockets with protruding eyes outlined in black and gold; overhanging eyebrows, black and white striped, as is a ridge above the mouth. There is a high gold protrusion on the forehead. White cotton band goes around forehead and black cotton fabric forms head covering. Label in inside near forehead and characters in pen inside right cheek.

History Of Use

The Pongsan Mask Dance-Drama and the Yangju Pyol Sandae Nori, both of which combine dialogue, dance, and music, are part of a cycle of folk plays found throughout Korea. This mask is used in the Yangju Pyol Sandae Nori and also in the Pongsan Dance-Drama. The latter is unique in its use of quotations from classical poetry.
