Description
Folding paper fan with thirty-four wooden ribs, of which the outer two are lacquered and black. Fan features a red and black geometric design of mountains, stars and moon on a grey-yellow ground; blue backing paper.
History Of Use
Use of fans dates from 6th century C.E.; folding fans from the 10th century. Fans served several purposes; different fans were used for separate occasions, such as teas, religious ceremonies and dances. Fans with painted scenes and figures are common after the mid-19th century and were often made for export.
Narrative
Part of the Miss Jessie M. Miller Collection. Miss Miller was a teaching evangelist for the Anglican Church of Canada.
