Description

Wood and steel farming implement with wood handle that has burnt, incised, and carved designs. The bottom is plain and burnt. The centre is incised with burnt crisscross pattern and band of lines on either end. The top is carved with two protruding legs, then two longer ones. The top is curved and burnt. The steel is solid on one end with incised designs and double-ended in prongs with barbs on each of the two prongs.

History Of Use

Degree of decoration suggests that this tool was ceremonial rather than a functioning hoe.

Narrative

Collected by D. Sinclair in Asmara Ethiopia in 1970. The BCPM received this tool from Mr. Kilgore, who had been given it by Mr. Sinclair, who had died in 1973.
