Description
Sickle-shaped sago pounder of stained wood, and cane. The wood handle has an animal figure with striated nostrils carved on one end. The centre is covered by an upside down v-shaped plaited cane fibre matting topped by a small ringed wooden knob. The removable part is solid cane held on by a wrapping of cane fibre.
History Of Use
Used for pounding sago-sago. Sago-sago is the pith of the sago palm and is important in the Melanesian diet. This type of pounder is found in the lowlands of Papua New Guinea.
