Description

Cloth, blue-green and rectangular with two selvedges and two cut, unfinished edges. A line of red machine stitching reinforces each cut end.

History Of Use

Used to wrap babies, along with swaddling bands, from birth to one year old. When closer to one year, swaddling is done only at night. Smaller cloths, used as diapers, are worn inside the swaddling clothes. Bayenta is made by males on the treadle loom.

Specific Techniques

Commercially spun synthetic yarns in balanced plain weave using paired warps and paired wefts. Warp and weft density vary throughout the cloth. Cut section of a complete fabric width. Machine stitched reinforcement on cut ends.
