Description

A thick, semi-rigid disc of braided and wrapped vegetable fibres.

History Of Use

Wrapped and braided stoppers are used in the mouth of clay water jars which have a narrow neck and loop handles. Some households still use clay jars while others use plastic containers. Men and women carry water from springs to their household using braided grass ropes to carry jar with stopper.

Specific Techniques

1:1 oblique interlacing with 3 strands of dried bunch grass. Braid is wrapped over a donut shaped core of grass cordage. Fits snugly into mouth of water jar.
