Description

Print of a sea battle from the Russo-Japanese war (1904–1905). Depicted are several warships firing canon bombs at a larger central warship that is on fire. There is a large eruption of water in front of the burning ship. Japanese characters line the bottom, top, and right side of the white band around the picture.

Narrative

This print by Hibino Totarō (日比野藤太郎) is titled, Ryojunkōgai tekisen gekichi no zu (旅順港外敵艦轟沈之図; Picture of the destruction of the enemy fleets of war vessels outside the Port of Lushun (Port Arthur). The text in Japanese on the right margin reads; “旅順口の海戦二露国軍艦ツサレヴイッチ レトヴイザン パルラタ外數艘我艦隊ノ為ニ沈没破壊セラルゝトナル” (Two fleets of war vessels named Tsesarevich and Retvizan and another named Pallada were destroyed and sunk at the Port of Lushun (Port Arthur). The text in Japanese at the bottom reads; “明治卅七年二月十六日印刷 画作印刷兼発行者 東京市浅草区馬道町五号十四番 大橋堂 日比野藤太郎” (Printed February 16 in Meiji 37 (1904). Picture made, and published by Hibino Totarō of Ōhashi-dō at 5-14 Umamichi-cho, Asakusa, Tokyo).
