Description

Print of a sea battle from the Russo-Japanese war (1904–1905). Depicted is a large ship in the foreground being attacked by other ships at sea. Black smoke and fire take over the right side of the print. Men in white pants and blue shirts are struggling to stay on board the sinking ship. The titles in Japanese characters frame the print. The English caption at the bottom reads: "The navy war of Japan and Russia at Port of Chemulpo."

Narrative

This print by Kamijō Yomotarō (上条與茂太郎/与茂太郎) is titled, Jinsenkō ni okeru nichiro kaisen (Meiji sanjū shichi nen nigatsu yōka) (仁川港ニ於ケル日露海戦 (明治三十七年二月八日); The navy war of Japan and Russia at the Port of Incheon, Feburary 8, Meiji 38 (1904). It is from the series, Nichiro sentō gahō (日露戦闘画報; Visual record of the Russo-Japanese War), no. 1 (第一; daiichi). The text in Japanese on the bottom right reads; “明治三十七年二月十五日印刷同年同月二十日發行” (Printed February 15 in Meiji 37 (1904) and published in the same year, 20 of the same month. The text on the left bottom reads; “画作兼印刷発行者東京日本橋區箔屋町十六番地四方堂上条與茂太郎” (Picture made, and published by Kamijō Yomotarō of Shiho-dō at 16 Hakuya-chō, Nihonbashi, Tokyo).
