Description

Rectangular, multicoloured woodcut print. Print shows Mt. Fuji in the background behind a giant cresting wave. The large foam-topped blue waves surround several long yellow boats carrying people. In the background is a distant view of a snow-capped mountain against a grey sky. There is a rectangular box with Japanese writing in the upper left corner. Stamped on the back of paper frame is "Printed in Japan".

History Of Use

Woodblock print "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" (神奈川沖浪裏, Kanagawa oki nami-ura). Modern reproduction of the work by Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾北斎); from the series, "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji"
(富嶽三十六景, Fugaku Sanjūrokkei). The original woodblock print series was produced c. 1830 to 1832. The series depicted Mount Fuji from a variety of views and locations, sometimes up close and sometimes off in the distance. The date of this reproduction is unknown.
