Description

Finely woven circular basket with lid. The weave uses cedar bark and grass, in the technique known as wrapped twining. The decoration consists of circular bands in dark brown, red, yellow and cream. The rim of the basket is strengthened with a band of cedar bark, the base is more coarsely woven than the sides of the basket.; Good

Context

The basket was identified by George Heye as Makah Indian. The original European tribal names and, where possible, current tribal names have both been given in separate GLT fields.; The basket is made using the wrapped-twining technique which became a characteristic method in Washington State and along the coast of Vancouver Island, e.g Nuu-Chah-Nulth. Many baskets similar to this one were made for sale to Europeans and are known as trinket baskets.
