Description

Round coin with four characters across the top, a signature below, and one chop on the obverse; two characters across the top, two characters below, and one chop on the reverse. Edge rifling slanted left to right. Obverse has zhangzhou zhunxiang, (right-left) meaning zhangzhou soldiers' ration (money); signature below; chop ren (man). Reverse has zutsu (right-left), meaning pure pattern; dongheng (top, bottom), meaning generally circulating. Chop mark on reverse: circle on inverted crescent; chop mark on rim: crescent or most of circle, with part off the rim; lines on the rim.

History Of Use

Forgery for collectors. Original coin described in book written in 1846. Several early struck dollar-type coins exist of this period: from Taiwan, Fujian, and Shanghai during 1837-1862
