Description
Part (a) Coiled (with bifurcated stitches) cedar root basket with matching lid. Imbrication in repeating zig-zag tri-coloured bands of dark cherry bark, cat-tail grass ?, and red cherry bark, that start at rim and down to bottom. The lid, part (b) has same imbricated pattern radiating out from spiraled center that has cherry bark and cat-tail grass.
History Of Use
According to Nlaka'pamux Elder and basket maker Minnie Peters this is a basket for storing food or related items such as wild tea. In the old style houses these types of baskets were kept on a shelf which hung above the fire pit.
