Description

Oolichan net; 7 meter long fishing net, made from twisted commericial cotton cords. Knotted strands throughout form diamond-shaped openings. The mouth has a thick cotton rope looped through all the cord ends; the opening is 4.2 meters wide lying flat (doubled); the rope extends by an extra 64 cm loop beyond the netting at one side, and 67 cm at the other side. The net gradually narrows along its length, and changes over the last section to a thinner knotted cotton fibre, with smaller diamond-shaped openings. The last section extends for 2.6 meters and has been attached to the larger section with a thin black twisted fibre cord. The narrow end is open, and is approx. 50 cm wide. The net has been repaired using black or green twisted cotton cordage in several small areas.
