Description

Ceremonial button blanket of black felt in a rectangular shape with a red felt border running all around a rectangular black background on which are sewn (as applique) four red designs: a killer whale at the top, and a grizzly bear at lower centre flanked by an eagle and a raven. White buttons are sewn all along the red applique designs. White buttons in triangular groups of three are also sewn along the outer edge of the black background. Two satin ties are sewn onto upper red border. Small copper plate (5.2cm x 1.6cm) with engraved inscription is sewn at reverse side of upper corner: "E. Gosnell & Son Copper & Carving Aiyansh, B.C."

Narrative

E. Gosnell & Son is presumed to be Eli Gosnell and son. Eli passed away in 1978, so the blanket is assumed to be made before then.
