Description

Woven shield with a wider end that tapers to a narrower end; at each end, the sides curve inwards and come to a point; plant fibre border around edge (missing on half of the shield). Front of shield is composed of two layers of cane that are lashed together with rattan with a geometric design at both ends in dark grey. Back of shield has bundle of leaves? that have been folded under the handle and lengthwise.

Narrative

Burnett was likely referring to this shield (as well as C359, and 2642/3) when he wrote about curio-collecting on New Georgia. "I secured a large number of finely carved spears, clubs, and grotesque canoe gods, inlaid with pearl shell, also several of the beautifully-made New Georgia shields ...."
