Description

Scraper of black shale. Locality: Site 26. Guss Island, Garrison Bay, Roche Harbor, San Juan Islands, Wash.* This object was originally classified as an unassociated funerary object based on the fact that it was removed from Guss Island, a well known burial island. After further review of A.G. Colley's field notes, it became clear that a slate knife and unmodified stones were the only objects found in association with burials. The remaining objects were found on the beach. Colley's notebook states "slate knife is done up in white cloth, two or more odds, are from beach, not graves, knife only object." There are three slate knives in this accession. There is no way to determine which was from graves and which from the beach, so all three are being categorized as associated funerary objects. M. Noble 7/9/2007 *Information is from the original accession ledger.
