Description

Stand for a hat (1059/1). Hat fits closely on an upper wooden mould (part a) in the shape of a tapered cylinder that is hollowed on the inside to accommodate the top of a flat vertical wooden support (part b). Support is rounded at the top and set into a rectangular base of the same brown wood.

History Of Use

Moulds were used to form the crown of hats. A separate mould was used to shape the brim. Stands of this type may have been used to display hats in the market, for sale. A ceramic piece may have been put inside the mould to make it sit firmly on the stand. (See, also, 1059/1.)
