Description

A brown mask with fused dark brown upraised eyebrows, semi-oval cut out eyes with hooded eyelids, a curved nose with the nostrils cut out, and an open cut out mouth outlined with zigzags on the lips. The ears are circular knobs, and the cheeks are carved with a horizontal rectangular design. The headdress is made with plant fibre and leaf covered with dark brown and red fabric with a pony-tail at the top.

History Of Use

Used in initiation ceremonies, mbuya masks represent common village roles, moral exemplification, and prominent individuals, to demonstrate ideals of male comportment. This mask may represent the playful tundu, who mixing among the audience, parodies the other characters.
