An off-white linen tablecloth with embroidered floral border on all sides, a central panel with scattered floral and cherry motifs, and corner panels with floral motifs. Designs worked in counted cross stitch with multi-coloured thread. All edges finished with four rows of hand-knotted cotton fringe. Pieced in two places, but the joins are concealed on the top side with decorative stitching.
Made of locally grown linen by the donor while she was in the Ukraine. She got the pattern from other people, then decided on the arrangement of the design elements herself. She said the pattern could be recognized as coming from a particular province. She lived in the village of Lubien Wielki, southwest of L'vov, famous for a spa. She learned embroidery in school in about 1904-5. The area was under Austrian control at that time.
