Description

A woman's white rectangular shawl of very sheer, crisp, finely spun silk. Repeated geometric and floral pattern design formed with heavier glossy thread, and gold metallic thread woven in. Selvages of heavier threads. Ends are fringed.

History Of Use

Worn wrapped loosely around the head, framing the face, with the ends crossed under the chin and allowed to hang to the front and back at the shoulder. Worn by itself or as part of a more elaborate headdress. May also have been worn wrapped loosely around the neck, with the ends crossed and allowed to hang to the front and back at the shoulder. Worn by a married woman to indicate her social status.
